CryoVex Arctic March/April 2017

This is the diary of the BAS instrumentation for CryoVex 2017 field season flying across the Arctic April 2017.

Project is also mentioned in an ESA blog post.

Tom and Russ remove instrumentation from aircraft at Duxford.

Aircraft arrives back in UK.

Russ arrive back in UK.

Russ Edmonton -> Calgary -> London.

Henriette continues with the aircraft across Greenland to Svalbard and is joined by Sine in Svalbard.

Everyone escapes Cambridge Bay. AZ departs. Russ -> Yellowknife -> Edmonton

Weather improves. Flights out full. Road to airport blocked with snowdrifts.

Blizzards. No flights.

No commercial flights. Henriette finished terrestrial survey lines.

Alex went through radar on ground with Henriette. Alex then flew out. Poor weather but Henriette and Russ went out in afternoon and flew first half of terrestrial lines and repeated some sea ice lines until sun was too low. Waypoints in aircraft GPS but lost route.

Poor weather. No flying. Downloaded more data. OXTS doesn't seem to synchronize. Refuelled aircraft. Produced more waypoint files with Jeremy.

Flight Yellowknife->Cambridge Bay. Afternoon flight on some satellite lines.

Henriette not arrived so we did our best to collect data. Probably ok.

Moved into house. Bunking with Jeremy. Usual arrival Chaos.
Turns out DTU GPS was not logging as there were no start up instructions.

Final preps, packing. Cargo consigned.

Alan, Steve, Liam, Russ and Alex fly Springbank->Edmonton->Yellowknife.

Radiometer shade loose on arrival and removed from LH side.

Flight permissions sent through for Alert etc albeit for a different Twin Otter.

Arne flies home.

Arne and Alex arrived from Iceland via Toronto with their equipment at the hotel about 01:00.

Equipment fitted and test flight. Front wheel/ski/strut fixed.

Rod flies home tonight with the lithium batteries.

Radar Fitted (credit:Metasensing)

Alan / Steve / Liam nominal day off. Rod itemizing spares at airport.

Snowing / sleet.

Russ and Alan at hotel working on paperwork and waypoint/route configuring.

Alan tried a high speed taxi in AZ which showed issues still with nose wheel / ski.

Alan and Steve did a training flight.

Equipment mostly worked on high speed taxi. IMU seems to give errors in Riegl software but all logged ok.

Camera distance travelled trigger not working but 1fps ok.

Trying to get a grip on latest scientist waypoint lines and grid patterns just sent through as no one here has configured/uploaded these to the new electronic cockpit before.

Alan and Steve planning to do training flights to train Steve on the glass cockpit system in another aircraft. Fog in the morning though so Rod and Alan back off to Calgary airport chasing gun licenses, successfully. Flying binned so Steve left.

Installed Ka-band Radar laptop in rack. Configured Lidar. Operator notes. Aircraft pulled out of hangar and shuffled around all afternoon.

Woosok flew from London but forgot part of snow probe at BAS so being couriered to someone else to bring out tomorrow. Jeremy flying to Cambridge Bay today maybe?

Alan and Rod flew AZ for some engine tests but found a nose wheel/ski issue.

Cargo boxes mostly packed and detailed.

IMU surveyed in and configured. Radiometer logging checked. Steve King arrived.

Working on Nose Wheel

Radar bracket complete. Scanning lidar and Camera Board fitted. Camera memory card access hole cut in panel.

Rack fitted. Cabling completed and loomed. Power up tests ok. Everything secured and current weight/balance calculated ready for flight tomorrow.

Rod and Alan went shopping at the GPS store. Jeremy flew London to Calgary. In evening, Rod drove to collect a laptop from him that we now need to fit for the radar operation.

All the aircraft cargo to fit in

Working with structures engineers to modify camera board to fit Radar bracket and apertures in external plate for moved Infra-red Thermometer and Radar. Assessing need for stiffeners on Radiometer mounting panel.

Rack build ongoing. Lunch with owner. Weight and Balance started. Talk of flying tomorrow - Engine peformance tests?

Request for Radar engineer to fly on Twin Otter from Calgary to Cambridge Bay. Henriette doesn't have her aircraft fire and smoke certificate yet. Chief Pilot arrived in evening.

Rod pursuing gun licenses, sorting container and packing Arctic aircraft Zarges.

Roof radiometers and floor brownline installed. New rack uncrated, configured and trial install. Seat positions fixed. Lidar brackets changed to fit Camera Bay board. Camera Bay board trial install. Rack build started. Started packing return cargo.

Tanis aircraft heater cabling system demo'd. Late request to provide an extra laptop for Radar system. Jeremy taking to Cambridge Bay from UK.

Early Sunday morning start out at Springbank airport locating equipment and unpacking.

Engineers and remaining science equipment scheduled to arrive Calgary early hours of Monday 3rd from Iceland. Scheduled departure Tuesday 4th.

Afternoon spent shopping for 4 x -9 C rated down emergency sleeping bags and replacing ration packs. Also visited stores to look at shotgun cases and ammunition.

Russ departed UK to Calgary with luggage packed full of Lithium batteries. All went smoothly. Apparently there is no limit on the number of laptops you can take within your hand luggage according to the Air Canada flight supervisor.

Immigration seemed more concerned that he would have more clothes than the short sleeved shirt he arrived in.

Moved hotels in Calgary to be in the same as Rod.
