We hope to put a few up to encourage future competitors. e-mail: mtnavchallenge at yahoo.co.uk The Event The Mountain Navigation Challenge is a 2-day Mountain Marathon Score Event, involving teams of two people navigating over open/mountainous terrain carrying their overnight camp equipment. The aim is to score as many points as possible by finding checkpoints in the allocated time. It is understood that the event originated as one for outdoor centre staff, and was run exclusively on the Howgills in the early years, leading to it being labelled the Howgill Mountain Marathon. More recently the event venue has been any area close to the English Lake District. The name was subsequently changed to the Mountain Navigation Challenge – though the year is not clear. The event has always been small in numbers, which helps to maintain the friendly atmosphere. This comment from a 2007 MNC competitor on the OMM Forum sums up the MNC: "I did the MNC last year and can tell you its a smashing event, has all the essence of a mountain marathon - two days, carry your stuff, find some controls by route choice in tough hills - yet otherwise totally different to the OMM - around 100th the number of the competitors, no toilets at camp, nor skips, no dibbers (remember your pencil) , no retailers, one (score) class, fraction of the price. Couldn't get better value training for the OMM! Don't know if there's spaces left but if there are, get your entry in!" |
