Planning / Organising comments
Having fixed Hudscales as the Start/Finish, my initial thoughts were to
find a remote campsite considering Scales Tarn or near control 14. I soon
realised that to challenge the fittest teams I would need to push the
distance and climb and one way of helping this was to force people to
come back from the furthest controls to the campsite. This is also why
some of you visited the furthest corners of these fells. Wiley Gill had
been used for a previous MNC campsite and was a nice little spot. Jean
and I backpacked around the area in March. We didn't reach the far side
of Skiddaw and stood in snow on Blencathra with no views! It was therefore
only on the Thursday while putting controls out I discovered the full
misery of the heather below Ullock Pike, removing controls 17 and 23 and
moving 26 to the upper slopes of Skiddaw. I constantly swung between the
controls not being enough on paper to fill 12 hours for the fastest and
the heather being too tough for you to enjoy the far Southern controls.
I was therefore very pleased to see every control
site visited on each day and the winning team visited all except 3 controls.
The multitude of controls kept you thinking and gave a variety of routes.
It's interesting to note that every team that visited No.25 in SE corner
on Souther Fell also visited No. 26 on the coll by Skiddaw in SW corner
- these were the top 5 teams. The top 3 also visited No. 24 at the foot
of Longlands Fell in the NW corner. The weather of course made the real
difference.
Sorry to those that missed the event due to prior
commitments. Having avoided the LAMM, Bank holiday weekends, half term,
local fell and orienteering events, I neglected to check the Kirkby Stephen
walking festival!
A very big 'Thank You' to Jean for helping before
and during the event. With a winning team based in Cambridge, one person
without a driving license and neither with a car, she was indispensable.
Thanks also to Mr and Mrs Cowx of the Hudscales camping barn for being
so accommodating with our strange requests, parking and extra hours accessing
the barn (we started cooking the Sunday food before the Saturday night
guests had departed!) The help of Jean, Hamish, Lynda and Mike made the
collecting of controls much more enjoyable.
Finally, thanks to everyone for coming and being
so appreciative. It's really the people that make this event so enjoyable. |
