Further details of Hudscales
Camping Barn , map from Hesket
Newmarket and map from M6.
Directions: Leave M6 at jct 41 and follow signs for Wigton on
the B5305. Approx. 3 miles past Unthank fork, turn left for Hesket Newmarket.
Go straight up the village in the direction of Netherow. At the top just
past the Post Office where the road bends right, carry straight on. Hudscales
is the second farm on the left about a mile out of the village, signed
Camping Barn. Follow the concrete and tarmac roads to the farmhouse. Turn
left around the back of the house to the barn.
Map: You need to bring your own copy(s) of
the Harvey 1:25 000 Lakeland North map, available
online. The Northern part of the area is mostly runnable hilly
grassland dotted with old mine workings. To the South are the larger sometimes
heather covered slopes of Blencathra and Skiddaw.
Rules:
- All teams must hand in their control card
to one of the organisers, even if they are retiring. Failure to
do so will cause significant problems for the organisers and may result
in a mountain rescue call out.
- All teams must follow the country code.
Enclosed farmland may only be crossed by public rights of way.
- Each pair must remain together at all times on
the fells, except in case of emergency.
- Each individual must wear appropriate footwear
(fell running shoes or hiking boots) and clothing and must carry or
wear waterproof jacket and trousers, thermal base layer, sleeping bag,
compass, whistle and torch.
- Each team must carry a 1:25000 map, tent (bivi
bags are not sufficient), stove and cooking equipment, food (including
emergency food), plasters and bandage.
Other useful links:
There are 8 teams entered including an all female
and mixed teams. There's a late pairing of Jeff, my partner from last
year's KIMM with Steve Steele who won the MNC on this area in 1999. Last
year's organiser, Nigel has teamed up with John Preston who put in an
impressive run last year to get the most points on the Sunday. Then we
have John Redmayne, MNC winner 2000, back with his team mate Craig Harwood.
They won the Swiss KIMM in 1989 - we'll see how they perform 15 years
on!
For those of you new to the event, you should know
that it is tradition that the overall winners organise the following year's
event - you have been warned!
Looking forward to a fun weekend,
see you there,
Russ
