Informal with fellow student. Camp Langdale, Rossett Gill, Angle Tarn - retreated down Snake Gill because of blizzard and gale force winds. Snow and Ice above 500m. Camp Langdale. Coniston to Low Water Tarn and down. Patchy mist and rain.

25-29 Jan - Lake District
Solo. Camp Mickleden, Langdale. Rossett Gill, Esk Hause, Ill Crag, Broad Crag, Scafell Pike, Mickledore, Camp Wasdale. Very clear, dry, snow above 500m, deep in places, ice on exposed parts. Difficult descent with axe but no crampons. Wasdale, Black Sail Pass, Scarth Gap, Haystacks, tramway to Honister. Seatoller, camp Borrowdale. Deep snow descending into Ennerdale. Ice on Haystacks. 15/16 Feb - Snowdonia
Informal group of 4 students. Shared leadership. Moonlit walk from Llyn Ogwen to camp Llyn Bochlwyn. Bwlch Tryfan, Tryfan, Bristly Ridge, Glyder Fach, Glyder Fawr, camp at Nant Peris. Heavy rain in afternoon and overnight. Llanberis track up Snowdon. Mist down to 500m, snow on summit, some ice on descent towards Pen-y-Pass. Left Pig track too early so descended to Glaslyn to relocate and followed Miner's track.

8/9 Mar - Lake District
Informal group of 5 students, my navigation. Camp Mosedale (Wasdale). Rain & Gales overnight, collapsing some tents. Black Sail Pass (mist), Scarth Gap, Buttermere, Honister, Seatoller, Camp Seathwaite, more rain. Styhead Gill to Styhead Tarn and descent to Wasdale.

Informal group of 5 students, my navigation. Night walk from Glenridding to camp near Lanty's Tarn. Birks, St Sunday Crag, Fairfield, Dollywagon, Helvellyn, Raise, Gt Dodd, Matterdale Common, Threlkeld common, camp Mousethwaite comb (Scales). All of Helvellyn ridge in mist with drizzle. Trouble keeping to ridge North of Helvellyn. Sharp Edge (windy), Blencathra, Sale How, Skiddaw, Little Man, Keswick.

Solo. Cable car to Plan de l'Aiguille, across glacier des relerins, gare des glaciers, edge of plan glacier 2500m). Camp at Plan de l'Aiguille(2300m) descent by cable car. Fine, hot days, cold nights.

25/26 Oct - Galloway Hills
Karrimor Mountain Marathon. 2 day 40km orienteering competition in pairs. My Navigation with another student. Camp Talnotry, Drigmorn Hill, Nick of Curleywee, Dungeon Hills, Kirk Brae, camp Palgowan. Bennan, Buchan Hill, Glenhead lochs, White Laggan, Drigmore Hill, Talnotry. 43rd place. 192 teams out of 352 retired in gale force winds, mist and rain.

29/30 Nov - Lake District
Informal group of 4 students. Night walk to Skelwith Bank, camp. Cat Bells, High Spy, Dale Head, Robinson, Buttermere, camp Scales. Cloudy. Scale Force, Red Pike, High Stile, descent to Gatesgarth because of time. Windy, ridge in mist.

Group of 6 students. Night walk to Llyn Du, camp. Rhinog Fawr, Rhinog Fach, Y Llethr, camp Llyn Perfeddau. Rain and mist in afternoon and next day. Return to Roman Steps by low route.

21 Feb - Lake District
Two students, camp Langdale. Scramble Raven Crag and Pavey Ark, Pike of Stickle, descent to Mickleden, camp. Dry but dull.

Group 20 students lead by two Park Rangers. Ice axe braking practice near summit of Raise. Security on snow and ice, steps, ice axe and deadmen belays, snow bollards. Dry, overcast.

Splinted knee, descended to Llwyhyrhwch to initiate rescue. Guided Moelwyn MRT initial party to casualty in darkness. Helo lift aborted due to incoming mist. Casualty carried out by RAF Valley MRT. Return to camp in mist. Descent to Nantgwynant. Clear and dry.

21 Nov - Epping Forest
Rodings Rally, 10 mile overnight orienteering competition. Team of 4. 5 hours, dry.

2-23 Sept - Arctic Sweden
Leader of 4 person expedition from University of York to Sarek National Park. 12 days starting from Kvikkjokk (30kg packs) followed by 9 days from Suorva. Very few paths. Camp Kvikkjokk. Stuor-tata, camp. Pareks Same village, camp, rain. River crossing. Stuor-Jerta(1335m) descent to Katovagge, camp (990m), clear, fine. Two river crossings, one roped. Katoktjakka(1885m) by SW ridge descent by SE, 2 minor river crossings in dark, sweep search to locate tents. Mostly boulder slopes, slow, drizzle, cloudbase 1300m. Half day rest, exploration of lower part of Partejekna glacier, return to camp, dry, clear. Traverse of Partejekna to move camp to north side of valley, showers. Up Partejekna glacier, roped scramble through Bergshrund, ridge to Palkat-jakka(2002m), descent by same route. Practice crevasse rescue, return to camp, overcast, cloud base 1800m. Rest day, practice snow/ice techniques. River crossing, SE ridge of Skaitetjakka scramble, stuck 120m below summit, abseil 25m off and descend by scree/gully, return to camp. Patchy mist, snow showers. Three river crossings, back over coll, camp Kuoletisjaure, dull, snow showers. Return to Kvikkjokk, camp, overcast.

River crossing, Nordtoppen(2042m) ridge to Stortoppen too difficult, descent by ridge and 500m glissade, return to camp, clear, cold (-8C). Base of kaska Saekjekna glacier, turned back in blizzard, drifts of snow. Dig out tents, return to lower Kukesvagge, overcast. Minor river crossings, camp Vuoskelvagge, overcast. Return to Suorva.

Party of 4 in two field units on skidoos, to find a new route from the Ice Shelf to Inland Ice rise. Travel over old routes to camp at Second Chasm. Some new crevassing requiring detours in patchy fog and twilight. Skied route across 2nd chasm and then travelled on skidoos. Pushed route 5km further to a 3rd chasm and found route across, returned to camp, 10kts, -20C, overcast. Started out on route again but wind started to increaseto 35kts by evening. Two further days tent-bound through gales. Walk and scramble in afternoon. Roped travel to extend to extend route to foot of inland ice sheet and then 500ft elevation on initial rise, still in crevassed region, clear, -15C, 10 knots.
