Gardening We have quite a long back garden, to the north of the house. About half of this is patio/grass, then separted by two sheds into an organic veggie plot. We've grown veggies for a few years now, but are still experimenting with what we like/can grow/doesn't get eaten completely by the local wildlife. The Henry Doubleday Research Association is Europe's largest organic organisation (by membership) and their Catalogue can provide almost everything you need. We have a sizeable compost but are also part of a council Green Bin scheme to take anything that we can't wait to decompose. The council are also very pro home composting. Jean is now a Master Composter as part of this. Diary 2007 A strange year weather-wise. Warm but wet early on which meant no beetroot, courgette or sprout plants - maybe the seed was just getting too old. The red onions were good when small but soon went to seed. Seem to be keeping ok though. Pumpkins survived as always. Peppers in the shed seem to be doing well. Asparagus seed germinated and there is now one row planted out. Lettuce were more successful with the damper conditions. The second variety of raspberries worked well - starting up at the end of July just as the main crop are finishing. Tomatoes in the shed were hopeless. Plants were fine but no fruit. Aubergine ok also despite the aphid population. Broad beans did very well as there was a lack of aphids when they were out. Cabbages are better than normal too, partly due to netting keeping the buterflies out but there are still some caterpillars. All looks good for leeks and parsnips. Potatoes were largely blight free too - if only I could remember which type from the supermarket we planted.. |
