Diary 2004
Mid-Feb
Green manure crops dug in. Compost dug into plot 2, fruit and
strip by shed. Harvesting over wintered beetroot, leeks, parsnips, black
radish, sprouts. Onions doing ok. All garlic through and onions doing
well. Cloches over some of plot 2 to warm soil. Tomato seeds started in
yoghurt warmer!
Early March
Planted Broad Beans under cloches, One row beetroot, one row radish, shallots.
Bought pasnip seed.
Mid March
Planted a couple of rows of potatoes having dug up last of sprouts.
End March
Broad Beans through, Raspberries sprouting well. Leek and sprout seed
under cloches. Extra row of potatoes.
Mid April
Potatoes through. Buds on raspberries and blackcurrants. Parsnips germinated
well so far.
End April
Last Spanish radish pulled, almost finished parsnips. Some leeks going
to seed.
Extra freezer turned off. Set up canes for beans. Beans and sweetcorn
through in shed.
Raspberry frame built.
May
Sweetcorn and beans planted out. Sprouts transplanted. Final Beetroot
rows, swede and turnips sown.
Early July
Finished off Strawberries and chopped back most Broad Beans. Transplanted
leeks. First beetroot almost ready. Larger potatoes pulled from surface.
Raspberries in full flow.
Early August
Raspberries finished, nets off. Strawberries cut back. Two rows of potatoes
harvested & all the onions. Transplanted remaining leeks and planted
Black Radish seeds. Old leaf beet plants pulled out that had gone to seed
- restart next year.
Mid October
Harvesting black radish, leeks, parsnips, beetroot, rhubarb.
Pulled up most beans, left some for seed. Removed tomatoes. Compost into
current Brassica plot, dug and red onion sets planted. Old
large shed taken down.
November
Constructing new shed at the bottom of the garden. Had to pull up a lot
of beetroot (some pickled) and parsnips to make space. Strawberries moved
to spare ground and compost relocated during building works.
December
New wood shed and compost bins with re-arranging for ducks. Christmas
dinner with our own sprouts, parsnips and the last of the potatoes.
